Sunglasses: 4 Tips On How To Choose Them

In summer, the sunglasses are essential to preserve your capital view. The advice of Dr. Lalanne, ophthalmologist, to not choose lightly.

Avoid sunburn of the eye

The harmful effects of the Sun are known since antiquity. We now know that its lights are saving no structure of the eye. At the level of the eyelids, as the conjunctiva (membrane) or the cornea (part hard, transparent), prolonged exposure can cause ” sunburn “.

These manifest themselves in a burn of the eyelids with inflammation of the conjunctiva ( conjunctivitis ) or the cornea (keratitis). Exposure to intense radiation, aloft, the risk of burning is maximum: it is blindness of snow, very painful, which requires to stay in the dark for several days.

Already thinking of cataract

On the internal structures of the eye, the lens and the retina, exposure to the Sun has long term effects. For Cécile Delcourt, researcher at Inserm, the action of UV on the lens is proven: it’s cataract (clouding progressive), faster when you live in a very sunny area.

We also know that looking directly at the Sun can damage the retina. But we haven’t found a connection between light and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). However, a US study suggests that this risk is increased intense exposures, especially in childhood. The role of UV in glaucoma , there are no…

To learn more, the Inserm in Bordeaux team has started a study on the factors increasing the risk of cataract, glaucoma and AMD. In the meantime, protect your eyes!

As long-term eye burns can increase the risk of cancer.

Sunglasses: what glasses choose?

Your Sun glasses must filter 100% of UV RAYS while letting light enough to not disrupt vision. So forget the gadgets glasses purchased on the sly.

Especially for children ! If they do not filter anything, is better not to put, as the pupils dilate behind dark glasses. Result: harmful rays come in greater numbers directly on the retina, where they can then create irreversible lesions.

And color?

Color glasses depends on the situation and possibly a refractive defect. Dr. Lalanne advises rather brown glasses to the myopic and green glasses to the hypermetropia.

But gray is suitable for everyone, because he respects the color vision. It is recommended to those who make golf, biking or running . Finally, the yellow gives a good perception of the depths and strengthens contrasts.

Sunglasses: what UV protection?

If the quality of UV filtration is not mentioned, beware. First check that the CE is indicated. This European standard of UV protection guarantees that glasses let no more than 5% of UVB. Then prefer a pair of glasses which shows clearly which category it fits:

-Category 0 : these lenses absorb up to 20% of the light. In winter only.

-Category 1 : they stop between 20 and 57% of the light. To wear in gray weather.

-Category 2 : they absorb between 57 and 82% of the light. Weather sunny city.

-Category 3 : they filter between 82 and 92% of the solar luminosity. The ideal choice in summer.

-Category 4 : these lenses are not suitable for driving, because they absorb between 92 and 97% of the light. To wear in case of exceptional brightness (sea, mountain).

And the mount?

“It must be large enough to cover the eyes and eyelids while wrapping the sides”, says Dr. Marie-Christine Lalanne, ophthalmologist. To do this, prefer large branches or well curved forms, which are all the rage this year. The advantage: they prevent the passage of rays on the sides and above as well as below in case of strong reverb, frequent in the mountains and the sea.

With the collaboration of Dr. Dr. Marie Lalanne, of the French society of Ophthalmology
